SUDDEN VICTORY SHOOTOUT WIN SENDS ONTARIO BLUE TO FINAL GAME FOR FIRST TIME
SURREY, B.C. – For the first time ever, two Ontario teams will meet in the gold medal game, with Ontario
Blue securing its first ever berth into the final by beating Quebec 1-0 in Saturday night’s semifinal.
But it took a ten-minute overtime period and a sudden victory shootout to secure the very sweet victory
for Ontario Blue. Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ont.) was the first and fourth shooter for her team, using her
soft hands to find the back of Quebec’s net for the win in what was arguably the most exciting of the
tournament. Seconds after Richards scored, Ontario Blue players jumped the bench and piled on top of each
other to celebrate the milestone win.
Both Ontario Blue goalies played outstanding games, with Kristy Garrow (London, Ont.) stopping all four
Quebec attempts fired at her during the shootout and Danielle Butters (London, Ont.) protecting the crease at
all costs through three periods of regulation play and overtime.
Butters was named player of the game for her team, while netminder Cloé Desjardins received the
well-deserved honour for Quebec. Ontario Blue faces five-time defending champions Ontario Red in Sunday’s
gold medal matchup, which will be aired live on TSN/RDS at 3 p.m. PT. Quebec takes on Manitoba in the bronze
medal game at 11:30 a.m PT. |
