Concussions not only deprive players of playing time, they end players'
careers and can have serious long term health effects. Checks to the head demonstrate a lack of respect and
fair play and as a consequence we all need to play a role in reducing these types of hits.
As a parent it is important that you are aware that any moderate or severe
blow to the head will be penalized. Whether it is elbowing, high sticking, roughing or cross-checking, hits
to the head are an intentional act of violence and must be treated with zero tolerance on the part of the
official at all times.
As parents in the game you can help to encourage players to never deliberately check to the head. This
will help to reduce concussions in the game of hockey. Remember the following prevention tips:
• Reinforce with your child the importance of respecting all
players, coaches and officials.
• Make sure your young player’s hockey helmet fits and is
fastened properly.
• Work with your coach to teach players to be aware and play
heads-up hockey and to use correct bodychecking techniques, never hitting another player from behind or in
the head.
