ROBERTO LUONGO TO MISS REMAINDER OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOLLOWING INJURY

HANNOVER, GERMANY - The Canadian Hockey Association announced late Friday night from Germany that Canadaís Roberto Luongo will miss the remainder of the 2001 IIHF World Hockey Championship after suffering a fractured right index finger during a 6-2 victory over Switzerland.

Luongo, a native of Montréal, QC, suffered the injury when a slapshot from the blueline hit his hand during second period action.

Luongo had only allowed two goals to this point in this tournament, and was the goalie of record in Canadaís preliminary round
victory over Italy.

ìWeíre very disappointed for Roberto who has played extremely well both in games and in practices, ì said Assistant Executive Director Lanny McDonald.

Canada has two goaltenders remaining on itís roster: Fred Brathwaite, of Ottawa, ON, and Jean-Sébastien Giguère, of Montreal, QC.

McDonald, Fleming and the rest of the management and coaching staff will evaluate the situation and plan to add a third goaltender. At this time, no decision has been made.
